USA Today: When should you unfollow your exes?

“There’s definitely a point to unfollowing an ex,” says Damona Hoffman, dating coach and host of The Dates & Mates podcast. “When a relationship ends, we usually need time and space to heal and process what happened, and social media makes it difficult to keep distance.”

Keeping a person who isn’t in your life in your feed can keep you “emotionally attached to them,” and seeing them move on — as treasured as it may be — can be painful, Hoffman adds. But there are times when moving on from a relationship isn’t as simple as clicking “unfollow,” especially if you share children, work, or finances with an ex.

“Publicly removing an ex may be more uncomfortable than following him,” she adds. “A good option is to pause their posts until you have a chance to get some distance and closure. That way they don’t know you’re blocking them but you protect yourself from seeing offensive posts.”
